Hi all! Megan here. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be interesting to talk about bike riding in Ireland. If you missed our first discussion of bike tours in France, please check it out here.
I really enjoy Ireland. It has been 20 years since I was there as a study abroad student, but I remember seeing grass greener than I could every imagine. The country side was lined with stone walls and the farm house I stayed in was charming. It almost seemed unreal.
If I was to go back now and visit, I would definelty tour the country by ebike. In researching what biking is like in Ireland I found lots of great information.
Experts Suggest Where to Ride in Ireland
Ireland is a hilly country, which adds to its charm. If you are interested in an “off the beaten track’ feel than check out the Kingfisher Trail in the Country Fermanagh, according to Tony Boyd from Iron Donkey Bicycle Touring. The trail is 300 miles, but can be broken up into smaller day trips.
You are looking for more of a The-Lion-The-Witch-and-The-Wardrobe feel than Nicola Brady suggests the Mourne Mountains, County Down.
Avid Galway cyclist Pat O’Donnell suggest the Galway City to Spiddal, County Galway 25 mile route. The Cliffs of Moher, he says, are worth the trip.

Three Tips for An Ideal Biking Vacation in Ireland
Ireland by Bike suggests the following steps for an ideal biking vacation:
- Start cycling. Every bit of cycling you do before you arrive will help you on your adventure.
- Dress in layers- Ireland’s weather is varied and this way you’ll be prepared for rain or sunshine.
- Immerse yourself in the culture!
Nora and Semus encourage riders to enjoy a music session in a local pub, take an open boat out onto the ocean, or jump into the Wild Atlantic Ocean. It’s rejuvenating!
One of the features we most appreciate about Ireland by Bike is that they offer electric bicycles. The Kalkhoff Agattu Impulse bike combines excellent battery life and the comfort and versatility of an all terrain bike. It’s a great choice for riding through Ireland. Hopefully, next time I visit the country of my heritage, it will be on an ebike and then I’ll be able to fill another photo album with beautiful pictures of Ireland.
